Santa Rosa Symphony Features Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto With Soloist Jon Kimura Parker

(SANTA ROSA, CA ) ö Santa Rosa Symphony concludes its current Classical Series season at Luther Burbank Center on May 14-16 with concerts that feature Jeffrey Kahane conducting the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3. Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker will display his dazzling dexterity in this monumental composition that was popularized in the film, Shine. Also on the program are Alborada del Gracioso and La Valse by Ravel, and Rachmaninoffâs The Isle of the Dead.

Parkerâs extraordinary career has taken him from Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House to Baffin Island and Zimbabwe . As a member of the outreach project ãPiano Six,ä he toured remote areas playing music ranging from Beethoven to Alanis Morissette, on instruments ranging from upright pianos to electronic keyboards. An active media personality, he has hosted a classical music television series, and has made guest appearances on CNN, ABC, PBS and the Disney Channel.

Of Parkerâs performance of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, the Vancouver Sun has said: ãA performance so exhilarating that anyone lucky enough to be present can hardly expect to hear its equal again.ä

Santa Rosa Symphony concerts are Saturday and Monday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Luther Burbank Center in Santa Rosa . Concert Conversations with Jeffrey Kahane begin one hour prior to the performances, and are made possible by Quivira Estate Vineyards and Winery. The May concert set is underwritten by Mr. and Mrs. Evert Person and Sonne J. Pedersen. Jon Kimura Parkerâs appearance is made possible by the Ruth Finley Person Memorial Fund.

The popular Discovery Series of open rehearsals continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. These concerts, priced at $10 for adults, $6 for youth, offer a sneak peek into the final rehearsal process before each concert set. Audiences for Discovery concerts enjoy free Krispy Kreme donuts at intermission.

Single tickets are $26-47, with senior discounts available. $7 Student Rush tickets (to students showing school I.D) can be purchased a half hour prior to curtain.
