February 10, 2005

(SANTA ROSA, CA) ö
Santa Rosa Symphony welcomes spring with its March 19, 20 and 21 concert set, highlighted by gifted cellist Daniel Gaisford performing Saint Sa‘nsâ Cello Concerto No. 1. The program also features Ingram Marshallâs Bright Kingdoms, a contemporary orchestral-electronic piece which is part of the Magnum Opus commissioning project, and Rimsky-Korsakovâs symphonic suite, Scheherazade. This 5th offering of the season in the Santa Rosa Symphonyâs classical series will be conducted by Jeffrey Kahane at the Luther Burbank Center.

Daniel Gaisford will demonstrate his consummate musicianship and charismatic stage presence in Saint-Sa‘ns romantic cello concerto. The Washington Post has said of the cellist, ă·Gaisford unleashed a passionate performance that crackled with energy. These notes were made to sparkle and Gaisford made them glitter.ä

Former San Francisco resident Ingram Marshall is one of nine living composers whose pieces will be premiered in the Bay Area through the sponsorship of Kathryn Gould and Meet the Composer, Inc., a commissioning initiative for new orchestral works by American composers. Marshallâs Bright Kingdoms incorporates pre-recorded sounds with the traditional orchestra voices to create a widely-expanded musical palette. Bright Kingdoms had its world premiere in January 2003 by the Oakland East Bay Symphony.

Santa Rosa Symphony concerts are Saturday and Monday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Luther Burbank Center in Santa Rosa. Concert Conversations begin one hour prior to the performances, and are made possible by Quivira Estate Vineyards and Winery. The March concert set is sponsored by Don and Louise Johnston.

The popular Discovery Series of open rehearsals continues at 2 p.m. on March 19. These concerts, priced at $10 for adults, $6 for youth, offer a sneak peek into the final rehearsal process before each concert set. Audiences for Discovery concerts enjoy free Krispy Kreme donuts at intermission.
