(SANTA ROSA, CA) –Santa Rosa Symphony’s Preparatory and Discovery Orchestras present their Winter Concert on Friday, January 18, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at Sonoma Country Day School’s Jackson Theater. William R. Williams, long-time Symphony violinist and mentor to young musicians, conducts both ensembles.

For players ranging in age from seven into their teens, the repertoire the orchestras perform is ambitious and varied—sure to bring smiles of delight to the audience. The Preparatory Orchestra’s program consists of selections by composers Gounod, Graun and Gluck. The Discovery musicians will play the first movement from Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, the Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saens, Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, and other selections from composers Smetana and Bizet.

The Preparatory Orchestra, founded in 1977, is celebrating its 30th anniversary season. This entry-level ensemble has a significant history of providing rich educational experiences for musicians who wish to play with a full orchestra while increasing their knowledge and performing with peers of comparable skill. Students in Preparatory range in age from 7-14. The Discovery Orchestra, established in 1994, is an intermediate-to-advanced level, full orchestra for upper elementary, junior high and senior high school students up to 18 years of age.

Admission to the Prep/Discovery Winter Concert is $10 for seniors/students and $12 for adults. Tickets can be purchased through the Rosa Symphony Box Office (707) 54-MUSIC or online at www.santarosasymphony.com, or at the door, subject to availability.
